Et indeks-fond som for eksempel Dow Jones U.S. Internet Index er designet for å følge amerikanske selskaper som primært er involvert i Internett virksomhet. Indekser som representerer selskaper fra en spesifikk sektor i økonomien, kalles Bransjeindeks-fond. Ved å handle et indeks-fond, kan du kjøpe eller selge en rekkes selskaper representert i en realatert industri eller industrisektor. Holding Company Depository Receipts (HOLDRS) er indeks-fond som generelt er mer fokusert på å inneholde færre selskaper i en partikulær industri enn andre indeks-fond. En stor forskjell mellom HOLDRs og iShares eller SPDR fond er at selskapene i HOLDRS er det samme gjennom hele fondets levetid. iShares og SPDR fond bytter selskaper hvis den underliggende indeksen forandres.
